Holiday travel to increase
More Georgians plan Thanksgiving trips this year than last despite unceasing economic pressure brought on by the worst recession since the Great Depression.
Thanksgiving travel should rise 3 percent from last year when the four-day holiday weekend kicks off Wednesday, putting 1.2 million Georgians on the highways and in the skies, AAA said.
The latest AAA figures mean 36,000 more people will find a way to get away for the holiday this year.
"We take the projected increase in travelers as a sign that economic recovery may finally be taking root, and we believe many Americans certainly share the same hope," said Kevin Bakewell, senior vice president of AAA Auto Club South.
A majority of those travelers - 86 percent - will climb behind the wheel even though the price of gas is 60 cents a gallon higher than last November, according to Greg Laskoski, spokesman for AAA Auto Club South.
